Raised in Kaunas, he studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, where he developed his distinctive artistic language and the personal colour palette that continues to form a central foundation of his work. Since his student years, Vilnius has remained his artistic home base.
For more than 30 years, Marcinkevičius has worked consistently with the human figure as both subject and focal point. Themes of identity, relationships, love, memory, and existential inquiry unfold within a painterly practice where figurative elements, expressive use of colour, and psychological depth merge. His works move between the personal and the universal, inviting viewers to reflect on humanity’s place in a world defined by continuous change.
His artistic career has included extensive exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Japan, participation in the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, and representation at significant art institutions and international art fairs. He has completed official portraits of, among others, HRH Prince Joachim, HRH Princess Alexandra, and HRH Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark. Works by Marcinkevičius are also included in the collection of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.
Alongside his own artistic practice, he has made a significant contribution to the development of the younger Baltic art scene as initiator and co-founder of the Young Painters Prize, an annual platform bringing together emerging artists from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Today, Vilmantas Marcinkevičius works between Vilnius, Denmark, and his studio in Galatina, Southern Italy, where new perspectives inspired by the culture and light of the Mediterranean engage in dialogue with the Baltic heritage that has shaped his artistic journey throughout his life.
